Multi-award winning interactive show STANDARD:ELITE at the Burton Taylor Studio

By Cait Sweeney at

At a time when class is back in the spotlight in discussions around Brexit, Grenfell Tower, higher education and the spiralling housing crisis, Hidden Track bring their multi-award-winning take on privilege, democracy and the class system to Oxford on Wednesday 12 September.

Standard:Elite uses interactive theatre to present an innovative take on power, status and choice in our democracy. As they follow the witty tale of a Boy from Highground carved out of clouds, and a girl from Lowground spun from spider’s webs, the audience have the opportunity to decide how the story unfolds. At least, some of them do…

Divided into ‘Standards’ and ‘Elites’, and progressing through live games and real choices, the audience build a new show every night, whilst exploring issues of class, competition and privilege. In our changing and charged political landscape, this is anarchic political theatre with new bite.

Hidden Track are led by writer Elliot Hughes with director Anoushka Bonwick, and set out to make theatre that’s genuinely fun, accessible and political, aiming to bring working class voices and audiences back to the stage.

‘Elites’ vote to change which way the story goes, while ‘Standards’ work to tell the story by playing games and competing to become Elites themselves. This highly original theatre experience won ‘Best New Writing’ at Manchester Fringe and ‘Best Newcomer’ at Brighton Fringe. Now it wants Oxford’s audiences to ask an important question: What do I deserve?

Create your own story. Make your own choices. Start your own class war.

Hidden Track Theatre was formed in 2014 and has produced work in partnership with Chorlton Festival, hAb, Word of Warning, Contact Theatre, Manchester Royal Exchange, and Theatre Delicatessen, Sheffield.

Standard:Elite was developed with support by Arts Council England and O2ThinkBig. This is the company’s first publicly funded production.

Artistic Director Elliot Hughes is a Mancunian writer, performer and theatre maker; creating work with an unashamedly working-class voice, informed by a childhood running away from bailiffs with a single mother on the poverty line.

Hughes’ original script for Standard:Elite won the Greater Manchester Fringe 2016 award for ‘Best New Writing’, and the script has since been published by WriteForTheStage. Last year he was also commissioned by Oldham Coliseum to write an original show for their youth theatre. As a writer and performer he has worked with companies including Contact Theatre, Theatre Delicatessen, Forced Entertainment, Word of Warning, and rural touring company Stuff of Dreams.
