Places Available At Outstanding Early Years Nursery Two by Two Setting

By Cait Sweeney at

The last Ofsted report for ‘Two by Two Setting’an early years nursery, concluded that “Children thrive in this outstanding setting,” which was certainly apparent when I visited recently.

‘Two by Two Setting’ is an early years nursery based on two sites; one in the heart of Windale Primary School in Greater Leys, and the other nestling next to the nursery at Pegasus Primary School in Blackbird Leys.

The early years nursery, for children starting the term after their second birthday, started in 2011 at the Pegasus primary school with funding from Oxfordshire County Council and was the initiative of Two by Two manager Karen Hopkins. Karen said “I could see a need for families and children to have support to help get them ready for school. We started with eight children for 10 hours a week and now we have the capacity to provide 64 places across both sites.”

She said “We promote ‘Free Flow Play’ at the nursery, which allows our children to learn in a stimulating and vibrant environment, enabling them to follow their own interests supported and nurtured by the staff with warmth and understanding.”

Following their own interests and encouraged to be as independent as they can be, everything was arranged for the children to be able to access it themselves. And what a fantastic assortment of things to play with indoors and out! It was great to see lots of wooden toys and natural materials.

Karen said “When we were equipping the nursery I tried to buy things that would last for 20 years. We try to keep plastic to a minimum but you have to have Sticklebricks and Lego don’t you!”

The nursery also offers some support for children with special needs, working closely with the special needs teachers at the school. Karen said “We do a lot of work around speech and language development and use sign language during singing time. Everyone’s included”

Whilst the Windale site has a waiting list (and you’re welcome to add your name to it), Two by Two at the Pegasus currently has places available starting in September. Sessions run from 8.30-11.30 or 12.15-3.15 costing £16.50 for either the morning or the afternoon or £20.50 if your child stays for lunch. Some families may be eligible for an assisted place.
