Musical Youth present Godspell at Oxford Playhouse

By John Charlton

The award-winning Musical Youth Company of Oxford (MYCO) returns to Oxford Playhouse from Wednesday 4 to Saturday 7 April to present an exciting new production of the ground-breaking rock opera Godspell.

Based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, and featuring music by three-time Grammy and Academy Award winning composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin), Godspell took the theatre world by storm when it opened to rave reviews in 1971. A firm favourite amongst musical lovers, the show dramatises the teachings and last days of Jesus, and features a host of high-energy hits including ‘Day by Day’, ‘By My Side’ and ‘Save The People’.

MYCO’s Resident Director and Choreographer, Guy Brigg, and Resident Musical Director, Julie Todd, have worked closely with MYCO’s cast of 55 talented performers to bring local audiences a fresh take on a modern classic. The result is an uplifting tale of friendship, loyalty and love set against a dramatic dystopian backdrop that will stir the soul and raise the spirits.

Director and Choreographer Guy Brigg says “The rehearsal process has been a fantastically collaborative experience and one in which we have worked hard to reimagine the original stage-directions to create something unique and unforgettable. As usual, MYCO’s professionalism, enthusiasm and willingness to explore new ideas has helped us to reach new heights of creativity and standards of performance.”

Wednesday 4 to Saturday 7 April 2018
