Bonn Week 2017: Celebrating 70 years of twinning

By Sarah Edwards

Oxford will celebrate 70 years of its twinning link with German city Bonn with a series of events over the May bank holiday weekend.

In 1947, Oxford formed the first Anglo-German twinning link with Bonn, then the capital of Germany.

To celebrate 70 years of friendship with the people of Bonn, Oxford will host a weekend of activities and coachloads of visitors from Bonn will travel to Oxford for the celebrations.

The events have been organised by Oxford City Council in partnership with the Oxford-Bonn Link, and cultural organisations across the city are getting involved, including: the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, Bodleian Libraries, Museum of Oxford, Oxford Studio Orchestra and the University of Oxford’s Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages.

The events taking place will include:

· Oxford Bonn Economic Forum – Friday 26 May, 08:00-10:00, Oxford Town Hall
· Beethoven’s 9th Symphony – Friday 26 May, 19:30, Oxford Town Hall
· Traditional Bürgerfest – Saturday 27 May, 12:00-16:00, Broad Street
· Bonn at the Bodleian – Saturday 27 May, 11:00-16:00, Blackwell Hall, Bodleian Weston Library
· Museum of Oxford Family Fun Day – Saturday 27 May, 12:00-16:00, Broad Street, Oxford
· Oxford Philharmonic celebrates Bonn 70th – Saturday 27 May, 18:30, Sheldonian Theatre.

Lauren Spiceley, international links coordinator at Oxford City Council, said: “Oxford’s Bonn Week festival offers everyone the chance to get a flavour of Bonn – from its history, to its culture and inhabitants, 250 of whom will be here celebrating with us.

“As we mark 70 years of friendship with our German friends, it’s a great time to shine a light on our shared values.

“This fantastic cultural experience is open to everyone, with events ranging from music and dance to history, craft, poetry, linguistics and economics. Some events will even be bilingual to welcome our guests from Bonn.”
