Broken Spoke Women and Bicycles 2017 festival success

By John Charlton

The recent Women and Bicycles festival, organised by the Broken Spoke Co-op, was a complete sell out attracting keen cyclists from all over the UK.

The two day festival was held at the East Oxford Community Centre in March with a large number of speakers, including cycling celebrities and up-and-coming heroes.  The programme included  practical workshops to help women overcome the many and various barriers that might be keeping them from getting on their bikes, guided rides for all levels, food, a chance to try out clothing and accessories especially designed for women, and a chance to meet new friends and riding buddies.

The Broken Spoke Bike Co-op is a DIY (do-it-yourself) bicycle workshop that teaches people of all ages and backgrounds how to ride and repair bicycles. The organisation is a community-based social enterprise and was started by people with a passion about life on two wheels. They partner with local community organisations, school groups, and individuals with the goal of making people more proficient and confident in bicycle maintenance and riding.
