Support independent shops this Christmas

By Sarah Edwards

The Independent Oxford Christmas Market in collaboration with the Old Fire Station and Turl Street Kitchen will take place on Saturday November 26.

Between 10am and 5pm shoppers will have the chance to visit the market at The Turl Street Kitchen, Turl Street, Oxford and the Old Fire Station, 40 George St, Oxford.

Following the success of their first Christmas Market last year, Independent Oxford will offer a thoroughly local, festive market. For one day only, up to 30 Oxfordshire based makers and independent shops will be bringing their goods to sell to Christmas shoppers.

There will be a chance to find one of a kind, unique gifts for friends, family, parents, loved ones, and there will also be workshops run by Merrie & Bright, Create by Holchester & Simmonds, Annie Sloan and Petite Fleur throughout the day at both sites.

Independent Shop stall holders include Burrows & Hare, Darn It & Stitch, The Hat Box, A Rosie Life, Sanders of Oxford, INDIGO, The Annie Sloan Shop and Fabulous Flowers. Independent makers, designers and sellers based in Oxfordshire include Caroline Sanders, Cassiopeia Knit Designs, Handmade by Holchester, Harriet Elkerton, Merrie & Bright Calligraphy, Sit Upholstery, Smoking Gun Vintage, The Basket Room, A Rosie Life, Anne Hudson arts, Custom Made, DoLittle Dumplings, Ethical Life Store, Guiva, Jericho Studio Pottery, Karen Morecroft Art, Magpie Morrish, Ladies who Lunch Jewellery, Miesje Chafer, One for Sorrow, Petite Fleur Oxford, Sarah’s Home comforts, and Smart Creative.

Harriet Peacock at Old Fire Station said: “We are thrilled to be co-hosting this unique festive event. We’re really keen to support fellow independents and champion the variety and quality of what Oxford has to offer in terms of gifts, crafts and local artisans.”

Independent Oxford will also be holding a prize draw on the day to win an Independent Oxford Hamper worth over £300. All customers need to do is fill in one of the Christmas Market flyers (available from the Old Fire Station & Turl Street Kitchen), get it stamped at both venues and hand it in for a chance to win.

Independent Oxford was started in March by Rosie Jacobs and Anna Munday as an online directory of Oxford’s indie shops to enable people to discover the amazing plethora of independent shops Oxford has to offer. With over 80 shops listed, Independent Oxford hopes to encourage people to shop local – especially at Christmas.

Anna and Rosie said: “We’re so excited to be hosting so many high quality local makers, creators and shops all in one space – there really isn’t a better place to start your festive shopping. We think it will be a real eye opener as to the range of fantastic indies we have in Oxford, and we hope people discover new favourite shops along the way.”

Independent Oxford is your one-stop guide to Oxford’s independent businesses. Dedicated to unearthing the plethora of Oxford based indie shops, bars, restaurants and small businesses, Indie Oxford also wants to get independent businesses working together and creating a network to share ideas, build links and work together.
